Artist’s CV

Vassilis Sperantzas was born in Athens. He studied painting and engraving at the School of Fine Arts in Paris (Ecole des Beaux Arts) and taught lithography at the same school (1976-1988). Since 1988 he lives in Greece.

His works depict scenes from everyday life with a strong erotic and sensual character. The dominant element is the plasticity of forms. His art is anthropocentric, with the female figure dominating. His work combines elements from Byzantine and folk art as well as from European art.

In his painting he uses oil paints, temperas, pastels, acrylics, silver leaf, while in engraving he works with lithographs and copper engravings. It usually uses repeated symbolic patterns. The pervasive erotic atmosphere and poetic mystery give the place a stage presence and make it distant and almost unreal. Other characteristics of his art are the richness of color, intensity of shades and clear outlines.
