Artist’s CV
Christos Markidis is a Greek painter and poet. He was born in Drama in 1954. He studied painting, fresco painting, art history, rhythmology and educational psychology at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1974-1979). He then lived and worked for a while in Paris. In the period 1985-1988 he was a scholar of the State Scholarships Foundation for the preparation of a specific artistic project in Greece.
He presented his work in fourteen solo exhibitions: New Forms Gallery, Athens 1984, 1987, 1990, Zalokosta Gallery 7, Athens 1987, Agathi Art Gallery, Athens 1992, Athens Art Gallery 1995, 2001, Art Space 24, Athens 1995, Z. Athanasiadou Art Gallery, Thessaloniki 1996, Polyedro, Patras 1997, Titanium Gallery, Athens 1997, Paratiritis Art Gallery, Thessaloniki 2002, Thanassis Frissiras Gallery[2], Athens 2007, Gallery 7[3], Athens 2022. He participated in more than 70 group exhibitions in Greece and abroad.
From an early age, his themes were dominated by portraits, the human form in various variations, and still lifes, themes to which he returned frequently throughout his artistic career. Particular emphasis is placed on the relationship between the figure and space and the expressive charge of the faces. The frequent use of dark tones and the overall treatment of colors emphasize the symbolic or metaphysical role of light, creating an evocative atmosphere, with distinct references to forms of artistic tradition.
Since 1992, his texts and poems have been published in literary magazines. At the same time, his poetry books Monozygo-Tessera Schediasmata, Diatton 1999 (out of print), Eos, Diatton 2001 (out of print), Atia sto skomento nero, Phoenix Publications 2003 (out of print), Amoen, Eriphyle 2004 (out of print), Cinnabar, Agra 2009, Drakon katheletes[4], Typothito-Lalon Water 2013, Erebus or the Other Light[5], Phoenix Publications 2020 and his prose essays Seven Essays on Art, Phoenix Publications 2002, Katamata, Gavriilidis [6] 2005, 2014, Armos[7] 2022 have been published. In September 2022, it was published in a limited number of copies of the CD Zebra’s Birthday[8] (Poetry-recitation: Christos Markidis / Music-sound editing: Yannis Mourtzopoulos).
