Artist’s CV
In 1947 he settled in Athens and, from 1949 to 1953, he studied at the School of Fine Arts. In 1954, with a scholarship from the French state, he went to Paris for the first time, where he stayed for a year, attending classes at the Grande Chaumiere Academy. During the same period, he traveled to Spain, the Netherlands and Germany. Returning to Greece in 1955, he worked in advertising and theater, designing many sets. In 1958, with a scholarship from the I.K.Y., he went again to Paris, where he settled permanently and opened a workshop. In the French capital, he met many important artists, such as Raymond Haynes, Cesar, Giacometti, Calder and Dubuffet, as well as Pierre Restany.
In 1964 he presented his first solo exhibition at the J Gallery in Paris, which was followed by numerous solo exhibitions in various European countries, Greece and America. In 1972 a retrospective presentation of his work was organized at the Kunstverein, Hanover and in 1997 at the School of Fine Arts (Factory) in Athens. Equally numerous are his participations in group and international exhibitions, among which are the Parisian salons, the Biennales of Alexandria in 1958, the Paris Biennales in 1965 and 1978 and the Venice Biennale in 1980 and the Europalia in 1982.
In his work, Pavlos utilizes concepts of neo-realism and pop art. By assembling cut strips of posters, as well as metal wire, he creates characteristic compositions with ties, jackets, coats and shirts hung on chairs, on hangers or on the wall, curtains, trees, columns and still lifes, landscapes, seas and fields, where the impression and the result depend on the play of colors and the way the material is glued. In a similar way, he has also created environments, while his artistic activity also includes two happenings.
