Artist’s Curriculum Vitae

Maria Filopoulou was born in 1964 in Athens. He studied painting at the école Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Leonardo Cremonini during the period 1984-8. He did postgraduate studies at ENSBA with a scholarship from the French government and Professor Abraham Hadad, during the period 1988-9 (lithography).

Maria Filopoulou is considered a representative of contemporary figurative painting in Greece. She mainly paints large-scale paintings and her subject matter revolves around the liquid element. Her works are dominated by light, water, the sea under the strong sun, bodies of underwater swimmers, bathing in waterfalls, but also representations of the seabed, in which sometimes scattered antiquities are depicted

Her works can be found in the National Gallery of Athens, the Hellenic Parliament, the Bank of Greece, the collection of the Goulandris Museum, the Frisiras Museum, the Kouvoutsakis Gallery, the Feliu Collection, the Antonis & Azias Hatziioannou Collection and other collections and museums in Greece and abroad. He has had 20 solo exhibitions in Athens, Thessaloniki, London, New York, Paris, Istanbul, retrospective exhibition 1989-2009 in Ermoupolia, Cyclades Gallery in Syros in 2009, and has participated in many group exhibitions in Athens, Thessaloniki, London, New York, Paris, Istanbul, Berlin, Rome, Venice, Melbourne, Miami, Beijing etc.
