Artist’s CV
George Goulas was born in 1919 and finished high school in Karditsa. He was organized in the OKNE, took part in the Hellenic-Italian War and then in the National Resistance in the Itamos area, through the lines of the EAM and the KKE, a status he honored until the end of his life. After the dictatorship he actively participated in the mass movement of artists. A great artist, who also participated in the social struggles that he captured in his art. His younger colleagues and fellow competitors remember him, until a few years ago, as being “present” at all gatherings.
Giorgos Goulas took painting lessons from the painter Kostas Pavlou (Paul), held his first exhibition as a child, in 1928, at the People’s Library of Karditsa, while later he attended classes at the School of Fine Arts, which were interrupted when he was sent into exile in Makronissos. He is considered one of the most important painters from Karditsa who with his works realistically depicted the Thessalian land of the 50s, the rural villages of Karditsa, the farmers in the field with their animals, but also the agricultural mobilizations. Much of his work, too, is inspired by themes of the Occupation. On the occasion of an exhibition held in his city in 1996, he donated several paintings to the Municipal Gallery of Karditsa, which are displayed in the Gallery’s permanent exhibition. He was also a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts.
