MAKRIS Thanasis
Painter
He was born in Kalamata in 1955. He studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts under the teacher Yiannis Moralis (1975-1980). He continued his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1980-1982).

He presented his first solo exhibition of paintings at the Artistic and Spiritual Center “Hora” in 1984. His subject matter includes sections where the human figure dominates sometimes (portraits, self-portraits, female nudes), sometimes the landscape. In any case, the subject works as a starting point for a plastic search, which aims to highlight the visual space.

His personal idiom is chosen creatively with expressionism, mainly in terms of the expressive movement of the touch, which often acquires an autonomy and determines the dynamics of the image. Characteristic in his work is the fine tonal scale and the methodical transition to adjacent tones with equal strokes. The center of gravity of the composition is in color and representation is made possible through its disciplined demarcation. The earthy colors and roughness of the writing embody the qualities of light that defines the forms or gives the sense of fleetingness. Human figures are often placed against a monochrome background to emphasize their presence, while in landscapes the forms emerge from the color, through which the space of the painting is shaped. The impetuosity of the brushstroke often evokes a struggle of the painter with his material, which perhaps echoes his ambivalent attitude towards the realistic depiction of the visual stimulus. Thus, while the subjects remain recognizable, the painterly treatment tends toward a kind of gestural abstractness.

He has presented his work in individual and group exhibitions. He participated exemplary in the exhibitions The Child in Modern Greek Art 19th-20th century, at the National Gallery Museum of Alexandros Soutzos (1993), Birthplace, at the Benaki Museum – Piraeus Street Building (2007), Visual Panorama in Greece at the State Museum of Contemporary Art of Thessaloniki (2007) ). In 2012, a retrospective exhibition was held at the Frisira Museum. His works can be found in the National Gallery, the Alexandros Soutzos Museum, the Athens Municipality Gallery, the Frysira Collection and other private and public collections.
