Athanasios Christou, better known as Thanasis Christou, is a Greek painter, specializing in seascapes. He has been called “the modern Volanakis”.
Biography
He was born in 1945 in a village in the Prefecture of Imathia. His main profession was as an army musician. However, his passion for painting made him abandon his musical career and dedicate himself entirely to painting. In recent years, he has lived and worked in Veria,
He has settled in this peaceful place after constant travels to various cities, including the capital. The painter has also traveled abroad and has enriched various private collections and foreign galleries with his paintings. He has had many solo and group exhibitions and his works have been auctioned by major houses. The dominant theme in Christos’ paintings is the sea in all its glory. Sometimes with calm, sometimes with stormy seas and ships battered by the wind, sometimes again with naval battles, the painter gives a dynamic presence to the space. The fact that he is known as a seascape painter to the general public does not mean that he does not equally love other subjects, such as landscapes, flowers, portraits. However, he always remains faithful to his personal style.
He has had many solo and group exhibitions and his works have been auctioned by major houses. The dominant theme in his paintings is the sea in all its glory. His painting (oil painting) “Battle of Preveza” (Xairetdin Barbarossa and Andrea Doria) is exhibited at the Museum of Arts and Sciences of Epirus. .His son Anastasios Christou is also a painter. Today he lives and creates in Veria.

In the colors he uses, a melancholy mixed with a desire for life is diffused. Perhaps it is the realization of the conflicting feelings that the sea evokes in the artist, which he seems to love particularly. Sometimes it conveys a dreamy feeling with its serenity and sometimes this serenity itself seems dangerous and threatening in the artist’s life. He has managed to marry warm and cold colors in his own artistic way. He tries to show us his love for the sea. The sea that helps him think creatively with intensity and calm. With a strong personal style and lyrical mood, he depicts the element of nature flooded with bright colors, giving movement to the liquid element. Athanasios Christou, through his work, has succeeded and has received very good reviews and distinctions in Greece and abroad. His works are in private and public collections.
