Takis Katsoulidis was born in Messini. From 1952-1958 he studied printmaking at the Athens School of Fine Arts, under the tutelage of Yannis Kefallinos. In 1962-1966 he continued his studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris on a scholarship from the I.K.Y. with M. Cami and E. Clairin as his teachers. At the same time he specialized in book art at the Ecole Estienne. From 1971-1976 he was director of the Decorative School of A.T.O. (Doxiadis). In 1978 he was elected professor at the School of Graphic Arts of the TEI of Athens. He designed Cypriot and Greek stamps. He was artistic advisor of Aspiotis-ELKA from 1986 to 1988. In the framework of the research programs of TEI he designed two new Greek alphabets for the phototypesetting (AGFA) “Apollonia” and “Katsoulidis”. Subsequently, until today he has designed a total of ten Greek alphabets. He has presented 25 solo exhibitions of painting and engraving in Greece and abroad. He has participated in many Biennales and International exhibitions.

His works can be found in Athens at the National Gallery, the Vorres Museum and the Gennadius Library. In Thessaloniki at the National Bank Foundation Museum. In the Rhodes Art Gallery. At the Pierides Gallery. At the Museum of Engraving N. Gregorakis. In Paris in the National Library (Cabinet des Estampes) and in many private collections in Europe and the United States. Recently, the Municipality of Messini founded the “Takis Katsoulidis Engraving Museum” with 200 engravings and 20 paintings, donated to the Municipality by the artist.

HONORS-AWARDS
  • 1961 First prize in engraving at the Panhellenic Youth Exhibition.
  • 1964-1965 Two lithography prizes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris.
  • 1976 Medal at the International Painting Exhibition, Ostend.
  • 2001 Biography Award for the book “O papa-Mihalis”, published in Lebanon.
  • 2008 Prize of the Academy of Athens for his entire artistic work.
  • 2010 The EBGE award from the Union of Graphic Designers of Greece for his contribution to Graphic Arts and Typography.

 

  • Lithography is a printing technique which was invented around 1798 by A. Alois Senefelder, based on the fact that water and fats are never mixed.
  • Frame dimensions: 43 x 52 cm. When water runs on the designed surfaces, the greasy ink “catches” only in the places that are engraved and not in the wet stone.
